Hi. I am Barry Joseph.
I am formerly the VP of Digital Experience at the Girl Scouts of the USA and Associate Director For Digital Learning at the American Museum of Natural History.
When I began at the Museum I used this blog to talk about my adventures, exploring issues related to digital media and museum-based learning. I featured original interviews, thought pieces, and highlights from my work and those of my colleagues at the AMNH.
Starting in 2020, with the launch of Barry Joseph Consultancy, LLC, I turned this blog into a place to explore digital engagement writ large.

MicroRangers March Madness
I guess I’ll do anything to promote MicroRangers! This week CBS Sports came to the Museum to record a goofy bit interviewing staff about building a bracket for March Madness. I carried a MicroRanger coin with me JUST IN CASE … Continue reading
Game Night Gone Wild @AMNH
Do games belong in museums? Well, the 500 attendees at last night’s sold out event – Game Night Gone Wild – answered with their feet: “Hell, yes! (and pass the dice…)” This is not the first time the Museum has … Continue reading
How Museums Prepare for the Arrival of the Future: an Interview with Elizabeth Merritt from the Center for the Future of Museums
How do museums prepare for the arrival of the future, positioning themselves to be leaders in the learning ecology of tomorrow? For my DMLcentral column, I spoke with one person who keeps an eye on that horizon — Elizabeth Merritt … Continue reading

Killer Snails: Assassins of the Sea available on Kickstarter
A year ago a group of teenagers spent a week at the Museum working with marine biochemist, Dr. Mandë Holford, game designer Nicholas Fortugno of Playmatics, and our team of science educators to assist in the development of a new … Continue reading

What’s the Buzz on MicroRangers? (A Brief Social Media Survey)
We’ve recently seen an uptick in social media postings about MicroRangers, from players as they play the new mobile game throughout the Museum. This is an informative (and exciting) way for us to collect unsolicited feedback about the player experience. … Continue reading

MicroRangers Promotional Videos
As press outreach begins for MicroRangers (here’s yesteryday’s piece from NY1) I wanted to collect these videos in one place, designed to offer a taste of the game. This is a movie-trailer style promo for MicroRangers. Imagine a narrator saying, … Continue reading
